Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to manage the operations of the Municipal Court.  This is a cabinet level position and as such the employee acts as the Mayor’s designee and in an advisory capacity on all Municipal Court administrative matters and serves as a liaison to other city departments, outside government agencies, and the community.  The employee is responsible for difficult and complex functions presenting new and/or constantly changing problems.  The employee makes decisions in areas where policy and law is not clear and/or formulates policy. The employee has full and complete access to a wide range of information where utmost judgment is required to safeguard the City's interests and integrity.  The work responsibilities include administering the issuance of criminal complaints, arrest warrants, and summonses to appear in Municipal Court; performing departmental administrative tasks; supervising the Municipal Court staff; managing the budgetary operations of the Court; developing short and long range plans, priorities, and policies; and receiving and handling complaints or requests.  Work is done under general supervision by the Mayor or appointee and is coordinated through the Presiding Judge of the Municipal Court.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, criminal justice or related field and six (6) years of supervisory/management experience in the interpretation, application and administration of federal, state, and/or local laws or six (6) years of supervisory/management public administration experience which includes budget, financial and personnel management.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must attend and successfully complete the Alabama Municipal Court Clerks and Magistrates Association Certification Program within three years of appointment.
