Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform advanced professional and supervisory engineering work providing technical expertise in design, development, construction, inspection, and implementation.   The Civil Engineer III class is distinguished from the Civil Engineer II by the additional experience required, greater complexity of assignments, the level of professional knowledge required and the responsibility for advising, assisting or supervising lower level professional and technical employees. Work is performed with considerable independence of judgment and initiative and is reviewed by the Assistant City Engineer for adherence to policies, procedures, and for program results. The essential functions are: supervises two or more full-time employees; supervises as project engineer and participates in a variety of complex engineering duties associated with the location, design, and construction of public works projects and provides assistance and advice to civil engineers and other engineering staff in a lead capacity.   Reports to the Assistant City Engineer.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering  from a four-year engineering program approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).  
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama or have comparable standing in another state and able to obtain reciprocity within six months.  

Five years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

NOTE:    Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Driver's License and an insurable driving record as needed to operate a City vehicle in the performance of work tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors and exposes the employee to hazards of construction sites including dangers of moving heavy equipment, inclement weather conditions, and high noise levels.  Work requires regular physical activities such as walking, crawling, standing, stooping, bending, and operation of a motor vehicle.
