The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise and direct all functions of the Traffic Engineering Department. This includes overseeing the planning and supervision of all construction, maintenance and operations of traffic and street lighting systems as well as supervising and participating in traffic engineering studies and the resolution of any traffic engineering problems. Primary work responsibilities include: developing short and long range plans for overall direction of the department; supervising all Traffic Engineering divisions and personnel; preparing and administering the Traffic Engineering Department’s operating budget; Establishes and maintains effective working relationships; receiving and addressing complaints and/or requests supervising and assisting in the performance of technical traffic engineering work; and directing staff activities with regards to handling daily administrative matters. The Director of Traffic Engineering performs the job with considerable independence in the technical phases of work. Supervision is exercised over traffic engineering and maintenance sections through division superintendents, managers, and/or supervisors. The Director of Traffic Engineering receives supervision from the Director of Public Works.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering program and five (5) years of professional experience in the field of traffic engineering and/or transportation to include experience in directing and supervising others in the planning and completion of major traffic engineering programs and projects. Must possess and maintain a Professional Engineer (PE) License.
