This position is responsible for issuing
or denying the issuance of building permits. In order to determine whether or
not permits should be issued, the incumbents perform a variety of tasks to
include researching, analyzing, interpreting, and applying residential and
commercial construction laws, ordinances, regulations, and mandates. Specialists
work with owners, owners’ agents, contractors, designers, etc. to explain and
coordinate the appropriate documentation and inspections necessary for
permitting. The Specialists will also review all of the documentation to
determine completeness, determine what additional steps are needed, and make
decisions based on laws and policies. Once the process has reached its
conclusion, the incumbents calculate and request the payment of fees and enter
data and develop reports to document the activities and decisions made. Employees
report directly to the Building Official.
Associate’s degree in building construction, engineering, architecture
or a related field and four (4) years of technician level experience in an
architectural, construction, engineering, or related technical field.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience
that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job
will be considered.
Certification from the International Code
Council (ICC) in Code Enforcement or Permit Technician within the first two (2)
years of employment into the classification.
