Chief Electrical Inspector (#CI3120)

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform supervisory and technical work in administering and enforcing the National Electrical Code, Ordinances and accepted standards relating to electrical system and equipment installation in commercial and residential buildings. Also involved is the maintenance of technical standards with regard to adherence to established codes and regulations, quality of materials and workmanship, and safety precautions throughout the City and police jurisdiction. Direction and judgment are required in interpreting and recommending applicable code and ordinance revisions. Work responsibilities are: supervises two or more full-time employees; provides technical support and information to inspectors, electrical contractors, builders, engineers and citizens; acts as liaison to electric utility companies, fire department and the public; inspects new electrical systems and upgrades of existing electrical systems; and performs departmental administrative duties and referred tasks. Decisions involving technical matters are usually made independently, but matters of departmental policy are subject to review by the Chief Building Official.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Ten (10) years of building electrical construction in a leadership capacity such as Electrical Inspector, Electrical Engineer, Electrical Construction Superintendent, or Electrical Foreman in charge of construction.  Must have an Alabama Electrical Contractors Board Electrical Contractor License.

NOTE:    Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 

Special Requirements

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to walk, stoop, bend, crawl, climb ladders or stairs as needed to perform inspection duties. Physical ability to work outdoors while being exposed to inclement weather conditions such as heat and cold.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be certified, or obtain certification within one (1) year of employment, as an Electrical Inspector (Commercial or Residential) through a recognized certification program in compliance with the International Code Council; and within two (2) years be certified in the other (Commercial or Residential); and within three (3) years be certified in Plan Review.  Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and insurable driving record as needed to operate a city vehicle in the inspection of commercial and residential buildings and sites under construction
