The fundamental reason the classification exists is to enforce the International Building Codes and City Ordinances with regard to residential and commercial construction. The work responsibilities include inspecting residential and commercial construction; inspecting residential and commercial construction for the purpose of compliance with the International Plumbing Code and the International Fuel Gas Code; inspecting existing residential and commercial buildings and facilities; investigating complaints regarding illegal/unlawful construction activities, unapproved occupancy/use of existing buildings and facilities and initiates legal actions; reporting inspections results. General supervision is received from the Chief Plumbing Inspector.
High
school diploma or G.E.D. Five (5) years of experience in building plumbing and
gas construction and installation including experience in a leadership capacity
such as superintendent or foreman over plumbing, plumbing construction, or plumbing
installations.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must
be certified or obtain certification within one (1) year of employment as a
Plumbing Inspector (Commercial) through a recognized certification program in
compliance with the International Code Council; and within two (2) years must be
certified as a Fuel Gas Inspector (Commercial).
Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and insurable
driving record as needed to operate a city vehicle in the inspection of
commercial and residential buildings and sites under construction.
