The
fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform supervisory and
technical work in administering and enforcing the gas, mechanical, and plumbing
codes and ordinances of the City and accepted standards relating to plumbing,
gas and mechanical systems, and equipment installations in commercial and
residential buildings. Also involved is the maintenance of technical standards
with regard to adherence to established codes and regulations, quality of
materials and workmanship, and safety precautions throughout the City and
police jurisdiction. Work responsibilities are: supervises two or more full-time employees; acts as liaison to the
Alabama Gas Company; performs departmental administrative duties; assists
inspectors in the field; coordinates and/or conducts technical review of
building plans; acts a liaison to the State of Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters
Examining Board and the State of Alabama Heating and Air-Conditioning Board; and
provides technical support to subordinates and contractors. Decisions
involving technical matters are usually made independently but matters of
departmental policy are subject to review by the Chief Building Official.
