Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise a work crew engaged in manual and semi-skilled labor performing a variety of maintenance duties on public right-of-ways, parks, ballfields, playgrounds, neighborhoods, and City-owned buildings. The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the application of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers for public areas and sport turfs.   The major work duties include planning for an assignment; directing activities on a work site; documenting project activities; and supervising a work crew.  The employee reports directly to the Ballfield Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years' experience in commercial chemical application such as herbicides, pesticides and/or insecticides, to include some experience as a lead worker; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Preference will be given to those applicants who have experience administering a mosquito control program.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

  

Special Requirements

Must have a current Alabama Commercial Applicator License (Subcategory-Public Health) or obtain this license within six months of hiring date.  Must have and maintain a valid Alabama Driver's License as needed to operate city vehicles.  Must work in a variety of weather and site conditions.  Must work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, paints, cleaning agents, or similar solutions.   Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed for regular work duty and special events.  During the spring and summer months, the incumbent will perform job duties at night.  During the fall and winter months, the incumbent will perform job duties during the day.
