The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise and direct the work of the Traffic Maintenance Workers assigned to the Signing or Paint Striping subdivision of the Traffic Engineering Department – Sign & Paint Division. Position incumbents serve as the technical expert for assigned subdivisions; therefore, the position requires technical competency, independent action, initiative, and judgment in the assigned area. Position incumbents are primarily assigned to either the Street Striping subdivision or the Signing subdivision and perform the duties associated with that subdivision; however, all position incumbents are cross-trained on the duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized as needed. Primary work responsibilities may include: overseeing and directing the activities of the paint striping or sign crews; serving as technical expert in the layout and completion of striping duties; serving as technical expert in the manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of traffic control signs; supervising the Traffic Maintenance Worker Is, IIs, and IIIs; ensuring adequate inventory levels of supplies and equipment; assisting in preparing work sites and work zones for crews; training the Traffic Maintenance Worker IIIs to supervise crews and their work; and performing the duties of the Sign & Striping Superintendent in times of absence. The Traffic Maintenance Supervisors are under the general supervision of the Sign and Striping Superintendent.
High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience in street striping and/or sign manufacturing and installation to include at least two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience at the level of a Traffic Maintenance Worker III to include assigning daily tasks, directing and training of work of subordinates, and completing work reports.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abiltieis to perform the job will be considered.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record. Must be available to respond to emergency and/or after-hours calls in order to replace major road signs such as stop and yield signs.
WORK CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sun exposure, extreme heat and/or cold, rain, and lightning. Work requires some extended work hours, overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty.
