Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to plan, assign, and supervise the work of an entire custodial force engaged with cleaning activities in City buildings.  The custodial force, approximately 50 employees excluding contracted workers, works in most City buildings including City Hall, Union Station, the City’s community and therapeutic centers, and restroom facilities at the City’s ball parks.  Major interactions occur with work force, department heads and their representatives, vendors, contractors, and sales representatives.  The major work duties include managing the custodial services division, supervising the City’s custodial staff, conducting inspections of City buildings for cleanliness and maintenance issues, and performing various administrative duties.  Specific oral and written instructions accompany major assignments, but the employee makes independent decisions and is responsible for planning and organizing details in the execution of instructions. Errors can result in not training staff members on the proper usage of chemicals and the appropriate safety materials to use during cleaning, i.e., gloves, boots, aprons. Work is performed under the general direction of the Assistant Maintenance Director, Building Maintenance and is reviewed on the basis of results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience supervising custodial crews.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Alabama Driver’s License as needed to visit City buildings and properties to assist employees and to inspect the work of employees.

WORKING CONDITIONS:   Travels to various office buildings within the City to assist employees and to inspect the work of employees.  Moves objects weighing from 50-70 pounds with assistance.  May work with and/or be exposed to cleaning fluids, chemicals, or similar solutions.
