The fundamental reason this classification exists is to
operate garbage packers, truck-mounted trash loaders, and other refuse
collection vehicles in order to service the Sanitation Department’s
customers. Sanitation Truck Drivers
serve as the leader of a crew consisting of a driver and two service
maintenance workers; drivers are responsible for setting the pace of work and
ensuring the safety of the crew and the public.
Major work responsibilities may include: operating sanitation
vehicles; serving as the lead worker for work crew; performing preventative
maintenance checks; communicating with customers and the public; and assisting
in the performance of manual labor. Although routes are assigned by supervisors,
Sanitation Truck Drivers are responsible for ensuring the assigned route is
completed in a timely manner. Work is performed
with limited immediate supervision and requires drivers to exercise independent
judgement while on routes. Supervision is received from the Refuse Collection
Supervisor.
