The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of roadway lighting and related electrical systems and equipment. Incumbents of this classification serve as lead workers to the roadway lighting crews by providing guidance on projects and on-the-job training on specialized equipment. Primary work responsibilities may include: overseeing and participating the installation, repair, & maintenance of City-owned/maintained roadway lighting/traffic signal structures and fixtures; overseeing the work of assigned crew; modeling, monitoring, and ensuring compliance with rules, policies, & procedures; operating the bucket truck and digger/derrick truck; training Technician Is in the operation of the bucket truck, digger/derrick truck, & other equipment; assisting in performing manual labor; overseeing performance of routine maintenance; performing administrative duties; and assuming the duties of the Traffic Control Supervisor in the Supervisor’s absence. The Street Lighting Technician II is distinguished from the Street Lighting Technician I in that the Technician IIs perform the more advanced-level tasks and are typically in charge of operating the digger/derrick truck. Supervision is received from the Traffic Control Supervisor. 

High school diploma or GED.  Must have three (3) years of experience working with electrical systems up to 480 volts, to include one (1) year of experience in a lead capacity (e.g., lead technician or crew foreman) and two (2) years of experience operating digger/derrick trucks. Note: An Associate’s Degree in Electrical Systems or closely related field from an accredited technical college is preferred.

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.  Must have (or obtain within the six-month probationary period) a Commercial Driver’s License Class B with air brakes. 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:  Physical ability to bend, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel and work in restricted and/or confined spaces for extended periods of time (up to ten hours). Physical ability to work from a bucket (of a bucket truck) at heights up to 160 feet for extended periods of time as needed to install, repair, and maintain roadway lighting devices and equipment. Physical ability to lift or carry heavy objects up to 50-60 lbs. for short duration, unassisted, as needed to install, maintain and repair roadway lighting equipment. Physical ability to distinguish between colors as needed to differentiate between color-coded wires and signal lights in order to make repairs.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed with exposure to both low- and high-voltage electrical outputs. Work is performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not limited to: at heights up to 160 feet above ground, in unkempt areas with tall weeds and exposure to local wildlife, and in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour. Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include extreme heat, cold, rain, and lightning. Work will require some overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty.
