The
fundamental reason that this classification exists is to serve as division head
for the general therapeutic recreation department at the Montgomery Therapeutic
Recreation Center. The Center makes
recreation accessible to those who otherwise might not be able to participate. The
incumbent works with assigned employees and the public to employ leisure
activities to help patients with disabilities or illnesses to deliver effective
and innovative services. Primary work responsibilities may include: planning,
coordinating, and implementing daily therapeutic recreation activities for
after-school programs, specialty programs, events, social clubs, wellness
programs, developing and disseminating publicity for programs, classes, camp,
etc., supervising employees, volunteers, and practicum students, developing and
overseeing budgets for programs, camps, etc., overseeing coordination of all
transportation and transporting disabled participants, preparing
correspondence, assisting in writing policies and procedures, and contributing
to the department objectives. The General Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator is
supervised by the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic
recreation or a related field and one (1) year of experience planning and
implementing recreation programs for individuals with disabilities.
NOTE:
Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite
knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must
possess, or obtain during probation period, a valid Alabama Driver’s License
and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) B (Passenger Endorsement), CPR and first
aid certifications.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to work flexible schedules, to include working nights,
weekends, shifting assignment, and rotating closing schedules due to
responsibility of being a key holder for the facility. Must be able to use
vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate emergencies such as
inappropriate behavior from participants, minor accidents from participation in
activities, mechanical or technical malfunctions with equipment and must
respond physically to these emergencies quickly and appropriately.
