The fundamental reason that this classification exists is to provide animal care to the elephants housed in the Montgomery Zoo. Major work functions include observing elephant collections and exhibits, maintaining elephant exhibits, performing building and grounds maintenance, feeding elephants, and communicating with others. The Elephant Zookeeper I may be asked to work with other animals or in other animal areas as deemed necessary by the department. The Zookeeper I reports directly to the Assistant Animal Care Manager and/or the Animal Care Manager. However, the Elephant Zookeeper I may receive direction and supervision from other managers and supervisors depending on assignment.
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 1,000 hours or 6 months of professional experience working with elephants within the last five years, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to those applicants who have obtained their experience in a zoo or circus setting.
Must be able to tolerate working under difficult conditions to include extreme heat and cold and deadlines as needed to care for elephants and maintain exhibits. Must be able to stoop, climb, walk, run and crawl. Must be able to lift heavy objects such as food bundles or food bags weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license and an insurable driving record in order to drive city vehicles. Candidates will be subject to a medical exam following a conditional job offer.
