Nature of Work
The
fundamental reason this classification exists is to plan, direct and
participate in animal care operations work including general husbandry of the
collections, record keeping, and exhibit facilities maintenance to ensure a
professional standard of operations regarding animal health, welfare and
conservation. Supervision is exercised on a daily basis over Zookeeper Is, IIs
and weekend maintenance workers caring for the animal collections and
facilities and acts as weekend Manager for the Zoo facility. The work
responsibilities are: supervises the animal care staff in the delivery of
animal care services; supervises and participates, as needed, in the care of
the animals; inspects and monitors facilities and grounds and reports
maintenance and repair needs; maintains record keeping operations (Animal
Registrar) of animals; and contributes to the department objective. The Assistant General Curator (Zoo) will serve as the
manager on duty for weekends and holidays. The duties of the General Curator
(Zoo) vary from the Assistant General Curator (Zoo) in that the Assistant
General Curator (Zoo is the Animal Registrar for the Zoo. The duties of the Assistant
General Curator (Zoo) and the Zookeeper II vary in that the primary
responsibility of the Zookeeper II is to feed and maintain the animals and
exhibits daily. The Assistant General Curator (Zoo) provides relief work or
acts in the absence of the zookeepers.
Supervision is received from the General Curator (Zoo).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology, animal science, or a closely related
field and two (2) years of professional zoo experience in the care and
management of animal collections in a zoological park, to include one (1) year
of experience supervising animal care staff.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience
that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job
will be considered.
Special Requirements
May
require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust,
pollen orders, wet, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes,
machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic agents, violence, disease, or
pathogenic substances. Must be willing to handle, capture, and kill live
rodents as needed to feed reptiles and other zoo animal. Must be willing to work evenings, weekends,
and holidays as required. Must have a
valid Alabama
driver’s license and an insurable driving record in
order to drive city vehicles. Candidates
will be subject to a medical exam following a conditional job offer.
