The
fundamental reason this position exists is to perform professional landscape
maintenance work. The work
responsibilities of this position are to maintain all plants, shrubs, trees,
hedges, ornamental plants and turf; maintains and repairs irrigation systems;
designs landscape work for new exhibits; trains and supervises personnel;
performs administrative related duties; and contributes to department
objectives. Incumbents receive
supervision from the Deputy Zoo Director.
Bachelor’s
degree in Ornamental Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Agronomy, or related
field and one (1) year supervisory experience in landscape maintenance to
include experience in pruning, fertilizing, identifying disease or insect
problems, irrigation, and landscape design.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that
provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will
be considered.
Ability
to perform work related tasks in varying, sometimes extreme, weather
conditions. Ability to work assigned
weekends, evenings and holidays as needed to serve as the on-site contact
person. Ability obtain and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license. Ability
to obtain and maintain a State of Alabama Ornamental and Turf Pest Control
certification within six (6) months after appointment.
