Nature of Work

This is skilled, supervisory work directing fire company operations in the Suppression Division, supervising medic personnel in the Fire Medic Division, or supervising Arson, Inspection or Training Division activities. Captains may exercise direct command over a number of Firefighters, Sergeants, Fire Medics, and division Lieutenants in an assigned company and are responsible for enforcing department rules, regulations, policies, procedures and common practices to include ensuring the proper maintenance and safe operation of apparatus and equipment, conduct training activities and medical operations. The Fire Captain is also responsible for instructing subordinates in accepted and safe firefighting, medical, arson investigation, training, and/or inspection methods and procedures. A Captain receives general supervision from a District Chief or Assistant Chief.

Minimum Qualifications

(All positions):  Must have one (1) year of experience and all minimum qualifications of a Lieutenant and be currently employed at the PS3 Level in the Montgomery Fire/Rescue to be eligible to take the promotional test and be eligible for the promotion.  Additional requirements include Instructor II state certification, Fire Officer II, and a current EMT III Paramedic State License.

Special Requirements

NATIONAL FIRE ACADEMY CERTIFICATION:  Must complete R308 Natural and Man-made Disasters within 24 months after promotion for all Captain positions.

FIRE CAPTAIN DIVISION REQUIREMENTS:  

INVESTIGATIONS BUREAU:  Must have obtained Fire Investigator certification from the Alabama Fire College. Must enroll and obtain certification by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) within 12 months after promotion or transfer; complete R206 Fire Investigation; Essentials within 12 months; and complete R0790 Fire Investigation: Case Preparation and Testimony within 24 months after promotion or transfer. 

INSPECTIONS BUREAU: Must have obtained Inspector I certification from the Alabama Fire College. Must complete R0671 Managing of Fire Prevention Programs within 24 months after promotion or transfer; obtain Inspector II certification within one (1) year; obtain Inspector III certification within 24 months after promotion or transfer; complete R390 Fire Inspection Principles I within 24 months; and complete R391 Fire Inspection Principles II within 36 months after promotion or transfer.
