The fundamental reason the
position exists is to manage and support all city and/or county server-based
applications, network and/or telecommunication systems and equipment by
designing, troubleshooting and maintaining complex IT systems. IT Specialists
are considered experts in their respective area of IT (Systems, Networks or
Telecommunications) and will provide formal supervision to lower-level IT staff
members. Responsible for administrating
Microsoft SQL Server database administration, Microsoft Office SharePoint
Server and websites and server based equipment.
Employees in this class support user departments in managing their
technology needs and works to enhance the user functioning of the department
with new and more efficient IT related systems. Employees in this class may be responsible
for supervising subordinate IT personnel in the installation, maintenance and
troubleshooting of various technology-related systems. IT Specialist employees are distinguished
from lower level IT employees through their use of considerable independent
judgment in carrying out complicated IT-related work. This position reports to
an IT Manager in their assigned IT area.
Network/Infrastructure:
Must have a Bachelors’ Degree in Computer Science (or a related field) and
at least four (4) years of experience in
personal computer maintenance including wide area networks. Qualified
experience may substitute for the required education.
Systems:
Must have an Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science (or a related field) and
at least four (4) years of experience in client
server applications design and analysis using Microsoft.NET based programming
languages to include Visual Basic or C#; web development tools including
ASP.NET; SQL Server Relational Database System Management; and report design
software including Crystal Reports or SQL Server Reporting Services preferably
for a windows-based system. Qualified
experience may substitute for the required education.
Telecommunications:
Must have an Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science (or a related field) and at least four (4) years of experience in installing,
maintenance and servicing of telecommunications equipment, structured cabling
and fiber optics and infrastructure. Qualified
experience may substitute for the required education.
NOTE: Professional certifications in the areas of software, networking and/or telecommunications are preferred.
Must
be willing to work at night or during weekends as required. Must be able to connect to the network from
home either through VPN or dial up to provide emergency recovery using City of
Montgomery-supplied IT equipment, or reports to work during non-business hours
as appropriate. Employees are strongly
encouraged to achieve certifications. This position requires a valid motor
vehicle operator's license to operate a motor vehicle.
