The fundamental reason that this job exists
is to protect and serve the citizens of Montgomery County. Deputy Sheriff Corporals serve as lead
workers to Deputy Sheriffs and/or serve as a specialist in a functional
area. Corporals may be transferred from
one division to another in order to gain mastery of various disciplines within
the department. They receive assignments
which require decision making skills and experience and/or are assigned to a
technical specialty within the department. Major work responsibilities may include: completing forms,
reports, and other paperwork; gathering facts and evidence; performing law
enforcement duties related to assigned division; leading Deputy Sheriffs,
Deputy Sheriff Trainees, and/or clerical personnel; developing, conducting,
and/or attending training activities; performing outreach, special events, and
public relations activities; preparing for and testifying in court; and
training deputies and/or serving as a field training officer. Corporals differ from Deputy Sheriffs in that
Corporals are provided with the opportunity to gain experiences in the
leadership of others or to perform work which requires extensive knowledge or
expertise. Corporals differ from Deputy
Sheriff Sergeants in that Corporals do not have full time responsibility for managing
and supervising others, but Corporals may assume leadership and/or supervisory
responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor. Corporals are typically
supervised by Deputy Sheriff Sergeants or Lieutenants.
