The fundamental reason that this position exists is to assist in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices and application of pesticides throughout the county. Primary work responsibilities are: assists in and applies pavement markings; assists in and constructs and installs traffic control signs; and applies various pesticides to include herbicides and insecticides throughout the county. The County Traffic Control Technician I classification is distinguished from the County Traffic Control Technician II classification in that the Technician Is perform labor-oriented tasks and typically operate the mosquito control truck while apprenticing for the Technician II classification. Technician Is receive more direction in the performance of their duties while Technician IIs are more experienced in the application of pavement markings, construction of signs, and the operation of traffic control installation equipment. Technician Is receive close guidance and direction from higher level Technician IIs & IIIs; supervision is provided by the County Traffic Control Supervisor.
High school diploma or GED and three (3) months
experience installing and maintaining traffic control devices or applying
pesticides.
NOTE:
Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite
knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and an insurable driving record. Some positions require a valid Alabama commercial driver’s license (CDL), Class B with Tanker endorsement. Must be willing to work various shifts. Must be willing to be on-call 24 hours for emergencies.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements and traveling over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. Work is performed using hazardous chemicals such as paint, sign & striping materials, herbicide, pesticides, insecticides, and other solutions. Work will require some overtime, night, and weekend hours during peak seasons as well as prior to and/or after special city events.
