County Traffic Control Technician II (#CO0574)

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this position exists is to install and maintain traffic control devices and apply pesticides throughout the county.  The essential functions are: applies pavement markings; constructs and installs traffic control signs; and applies pesticides to include herbicides and insecticides throughout the county.  The County Traffic Control Technician II classification is distinguished from the Technician I classification in that Technician IIs are primarily assigned to the operation of traffic control installation and maintenance equipment and the operation of the herbicide management truck whereas the Technician Is are assigned to perform more labor-oriented tasks.  Additionally, Technician IIs receive general written and oral instructions from the County Traffic Control Technician IIIs and/or the County Traffic Control Supervisor; however, Technician IIs are expected to exercise initiative and skill in the performance of most duties independently and with minimum supervision. 

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. and two (2) years of experience in the construction, installation, and maintenance of traffic control devices and/or the application of a pesticide management program.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and an insurable driving record.  Some positions require a valid Alabama commercial driver’s license (CDL), Class B with Tanker endorsement. Must be willing to work various shifts. Must be willing to be on-call 24 hours for emergencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements and traveling over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. Work is performed using hazardous chemicals such as paint, sign & striping materials, herbicide, pesticides, insecticides, and other solutions.  Work will require some overtime, night, and weekend hours during peak seasons as well as prior to and/or after special city events. 
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to lift and move objects up to 100 pounds as needed to move materials and utilize equipment. Physical ability to assist in maneuvering paint drums weighing up to 715lb. with the aid of hand trucks. Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds over head as needed to fill spray equipment. Physical ability to climb to and work at height of up to 12 feet as needed to install traffic signs. Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and bend repeatedly for extended periods of time as needed to complete various work tasks.
