Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to manage a group of engineering technicians in the planning, development, location, design, construction, and maintenance of highways, bridges, and other structures and facilities associated with the County road network and infrastructure. The work involves direct supervision over technical personnel engaged in highway and civil engineering activities. This classification is distinguished from the Civil Engineering Technician I, II and III by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned to include defining the scope of work to be performed and reviewing the work in process and upon completion. Employee in this class must exercise considerable independent judgment in the coordination of difficult technical projects. The work responsibilities are: supervises two or more full-time employees; plans, directs, and coordinates all phases of highway and civil engineering projects; assists staff with activities associated with civil engineering projects; responds to inquiries or complaints from the public or public officials; and prepares memos and maintains records and files to document all phases of civil engineering projects. Work is performed with general oral or written instructions and guidelines provided by the Assistant County Engineer or the County Engineer.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from a regionally accredited four-year college or university and four years of professional engineering experience in highway or bridge construction.  Six years of qualifying professional work experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree. Professional Engineers license issued by the Alabama Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors preferred.

NOTE:   Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and an insurable driving record as needed to drive a Montgomery County vehicle in the performance of their duties. Must be willing to work overtime, occasionally on weekends, weekdays and holidays. Physical ability to walk long distances as needed to perform job duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work consists of field inspections that can expose the employee to inclement weather and safety hazards such heavy equipment, noise, dust and dirt, uneven or rough terrain and requires walking. Indoor work consists of sitting and using a computer.
