Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this position exists is to serve as the initial contact from questions concerning payroll functions and provide technical payroll support in the Payroll Division.  Primary work responsibilities may include:  performing technical employee payroll work; training payroll clerks and/or administrative support personnel concerning payroll processes; completing onboarding duties for all City employees; providing information regarding employment and payroll; and performing general clerical duties.  The position incumbent has access to highly confidential information and work is performed with considerable independence in judgement and action.  The position incumbent serves as the back-up for payroll processing in the absence of the Payroll Manager or Assistant Payroll Manager.  The Payroll Specialist serves as a lead worker to the Administrative Support Specialist.  This classification reports to the Payroll Manager and Assistant Payroll Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and three years of experience preparing payrolls on an automated system.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Kind of Examination

If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
