Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this class exists is to have management oversight of Grants within City Departments. Major work functions include supervising the grants staff, managing the development of all grant programs, managing the administration of all grant programs, writing grants and interfacing with various City personnel and management concerning accounting or fiscal needs of grants. Duties are performed with considerable knowledgeable independence according the standards of professional grant writing and administration, City ordinances and state and federal laws. Grant and grant related programs include Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funded grants awarded citywide under the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG), HOME, Emergency Shelter Programs, as well as, non-entitlement grants, public and private grants, and other special grants. The employee ensures that all federal and state grant requirements, such as labor standards, environmental reviews, and project/program eligibility, are met in order to provide for new and continued grant funding. Work is supervised and evaluated under the direction of the Finance Director, Grants Director, and the Economic and Community Development Director in those respective departments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, planning, or a related field and five years of experience in grants administration to include two years of related supervisory experience.

NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must be willing to attend occasional public meetings after normal work hours.

Kind of Examination

Applicants are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Grants Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken.  If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
