Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to complete welding projects throughout the City of Montgomery.  The work responsibilities of the position are: completes welding projects; builds, install, and repairs fences; plans, organizes, and directs the work of welding assistants; and performs administrative duties. The Welder in the Street Maintenance Department is supervised by the Maintenance Supervisor, Street Maintenance Superintendent or Maintenance Department Director. The Welder in the Parks and Recreation Department is supervised by the District Parks Maintenance Supervisor. The Welder in the Leisure Services Department is supervised by the Parks and Recreation Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. and two years of experience performing welding tasks, including supervisory experience.
 

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Ability to work outside for long periods of time, working in small confined spaces, or other restricted spaces.  Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license as needed to operate City of Montgomery vehicles.   Ability to be on-call 24 hours and work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed for emergencies and/or special events.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and the supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants. Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
