Nature of Work

This is semi-skilled plumbing work including assisting in installing, repairing and maintaining water, irrigation and waste systems in and on various City-owned or leased properties.  Employees in this class perform a variety of tasks requiring a practical knowledge of the plumbing trade.  Assignments are made by written or oral instructions.  More difficult work is performed under supervision, but employees may work independently on more routine maintenance and repair tasks. The work responsibilities of this position are: troubleshooting and repairing plumbing or irrigation fixtures; assisting in installing new plumbing or irrigation in new construction and renovation projects; replacing/installing new plumbing or irrigation fixtures; assisting in maintaining city fountains, swimming pools and irrigation systems.  Work is inspected in process and upon completion for workmanship and satisfactory operation of systems.  Supervision is received from a Plumber II or III. Employee reports to Mechanical Trades Supervisor or District Parks Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D., and one (1) year experience assisting in installing, maintaining and repairing plumbing or irrigation systems.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license.   Ability to be on-call 24 hours for emergencies and/or special events.

 

Kind of Examination

The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Building Maintenance Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, applicants will be placed in groups based on their qualifications indicated on the supplemental questionnaire and application. Applicants within each group will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order. If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
