Salary Information
Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.
**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations**
Nature of Work
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to
operate garbage packers, truck-mounted trash loaders, and other refuse
collection vehicles in order to service the Sanitation Department’s
customers. Sanitation Truck Drivers
serve as the leader of a crew consisting of a driver and two service
maintenance workers; drivers are responsible for setting the pace of work and
ensuring the safety of the crew and the public.
Major work responsibilities may include: operating sanitation
vehicles; serving as the lead worker for work crew; performing preventative
maintenance checks; communicating with customers and the public; and assisting
in the performance of manual labor. Although routes are assigned by supervisors,
Sanitation Truck Drivers are responsible for ensuring the assigned route is
completed in a timely manner. Work is performed
with limited immediate supervision and requires drivers to exercise independent
judgement while on routes. Supervision is received from the Refuse Collection
Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Six (6) months of experience
operating equipment such as garbage packers, sanitation vehicles, buses, tractor trailers, and other vehicles
requiring a Class B CDL or higher. Must
possess and maintain a valid Alabama
Commercial Driver’s License Class B or higher.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience
that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job
will be considered.
Special Requirements
Must work overtime, nights, and weekends for emergencies and special events. Must possess and maintain an insurable driving record.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to stand, stoop, bend, or kneel as needed to operate and inspect equipment, perform preventive
maintenance checks, and perform manual labor duties. Physical ability to sit for extended periods of time, up to 2 hours, in order to operate equipment. Physical ability to operate equipment from an enclosed cab while being exposed to inclement
weather, dust, and dirt.
Kind of Examination

If more than eight qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered in order to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are eight or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
