**THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF MILWAUKEE EMPLOYEES ONLY**

IMPORTANT:  Applicants for this position are expected to have the aptitude, desire and commitment to successfully complete a four year (8,320 hour) apprenticeship program leading to status with the City as a Municipal Services Electrician.  Appointed candidates for this position must complete a journey-level Municipal Services Electrician exam with a passing grade before final appointment to journey-level Municipal Services Electrician status.  

In addition to on-the-job training, the apprenticeship program requires the successful completion of electrical apprenticeship classes (720 hours classroom training) at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC).  Satisfactory progress must be maintained/demonstrated in all aspects of the program during the entire four year apprenticeship period.  A Municipal Services Electrician Apprentice must complete the required coursework at MATC within timeframes established by the Department of Public Works and must at least receive a grade of "C" for each course.  Failure to successfully complete the required coursework may result in termination.

Purpose

Under the direction and guidance of designated Municipal Services Electricians, a Municipal Services Electrician Apprentice performs duties related to installing, repairing and maintaining electrical systems and equipment for Street Lighting, Traffic Control, Communications, Facilities, Water/Sewer Instrumentations and movable bridges.

Essential Functions

  • Train in the inspection, installation, service, repair, and/or maintenance the following:
    • Overhead and underground wires, cables, transformers, switchgear and other accessories, underground conduits, manholes, and vaults;
    • Electronic/electrical and mechanical equipment and poles used to carry wires and cables;
    • Computerized systems, monitoring/control systems, DC battery systems, high voltage systems (>7KV), variable speed drive equipment, HVAC systems, alarms, and various motor types;
    • Cranes, telemetry, fiber optic and metallic cable, data-line telemetry, parking control, and other electric/electronic systems and
    • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and all types of raceway systems.
  • Attend classroom training and perform assigned homework and associated independent studies.
  • Drive or operate commercial and/or non-commercial vehicles as needed in assigned work unit.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be available for emergency call-in work, as needed. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be assigned on a rotating schedule.
  • Ability to see colors in order to use color-coded wiring systems (cannot be color-blind).
  • Ability to work in confined underground spaces.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities in the work environment that require agility, including ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps or poles; walking and standing, crawling, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing, pushing and pulling.  
  • Must be able to work at heights in excess of 100 feet.
  • Must be able to perform heavy physical work, exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally and lifting and moving objects weighing 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions including rain, wind, excessive heat, intense cold and snow.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position.
  2. Good driving record. Driving records will be checked prior to job offer.  
  3. Valid Driver’s license is required at time of appointment and throughout employment.
  4. Commercial Driver's (CDL) License without air brake restrictions within 6 months of appointment.

Current Salary

The current starting salary (PG 7KN) is $33,247 annually and will increase to the next column step outlined in the table below for each 2080 hours of work service.*

The resident incentive salary for City of Milwaukee residents (PG 7KN) is $34,244 annually and will increase to the next column step outlined in the table below for each 2080 hours of work service.*

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations, the apprenticeship advisory committee and  the Department of Public Works Infrastructure – Electrical Services Division reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral, performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.  

** NOTE:  Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process and have successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
