Purpose

The College Intern assigned to the Appraisal and Administrative Divisions of the Assessor’s Office assists staff with research projects, develops reports, and provides departmental support services.

 

The College Intern works between 10-20 hours per week while enrolled in a related program in an accredited college or university.

Essential Functions

Research, Reports, and Data Entry

  • Assist the administrative and appraisal staff in compiling information for research projects and with conducting assessment-related data entry.
  • Provide information relating to property sales, assessments, and valuations for assessment managers, realtors, title companies, appraisers, City departments, and the general public.

Clerical Support

  • Provide general clerical assistance, such as distributing mail, answering phones, and performing word processing, including conducting mail merge.
  • Perform document scanning and filing.

  • College Interns must be able to physically able to lift and move up to 10 pounds unassisted on occasion.
  • College Interns must maintain enrollment in an accredited college or university in order to retain eligibility in this title.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in a program that includes coursework in business, data analytics, geographic information systems (GIS), real estate, urban planning, statistics, information systems, public administration, economics, or a closely related field.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Knowledge of descriptive statistics used for reporting findings.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn and discern a variety of documents such as Pictometry data, personal property statements, and building permits.
  • Attention to detail and accurate proofreading skills.
  • Ability to perform job-related mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret work-related documents such as Wisconsin State Statutes, the Wisconsin Property Assessment Manual (WPAM), and basic real estate theory.
  • Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Office, and the Internet.
  • Ability to learn and use job-related technical tools and resources such as the Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) and geographic information systems (GIS).

Communication and Interpersonal

  • Verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to build and maintain good working relationships with customers and colleagues at all levels.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with people whose backgrounds may differ from one's own.

Current Salary

The current starting hourly rate for the College Intern (Pay Range 9IN) is $15.60, and the incentive starting hourly rate for City of Milwaukee residents is $16.07.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
