There
are three titles within the Port Operations and Maintenance Technician series for which we are currently accepting applications:

- The higher levels in the series perform functions with increasing responsibility requiring additional training and experience.
- Eligible candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be placed on the highest-level eligible list for which they qualify.
- Depending upon future Port Milwaukee vacancies, individuals hired at the Port Operations and Maintenance Technician 1, 2, or 3 level who successfully pass probation and earn and maintain required credentials may be considered for promotion to the next level in the series.
Purpose
Port Operations and Maintenance Technicians 1, 2, and 3 operate,
repair, and conduct routine maintenance of all Port Milwaukee-owned equipment
and facilities, including boats, cranes, and forklifts, in accordance with all applicable
safety laws, regulations, and policies and provide polite and courteous
customer service to City residents, Port Milwaukee tenants, and customers.
Essential Functions
Port
Operations and Maintenance Technician 1-3 Essential Functions:
Equipment, Facility, and Grounds Maintenance
· Perform railroad yard and track
maintenance and repairs; replace track material, tamp ballast, and align track
using specialized tools.
· Perform rough
carpentry, painting, glazing, plastering, and cement work on buildings and
structures.
· Operate motor driven high pressure
weed sprayer and tractor loader when performing Port grounds upkeep.
· Perform general dockwall
maintenance and repairs; replace timbers and wood decking. At times this
function may at times be performed from a suspended staging over water.
· Perform general
maintenance on cranes.
· Provide immediate
maintenance response to emergencies related to buildings, grounds, and vessels.
· Diagnose
and make minor and major repairs to outdoor power equipment, Port-maintained
vehicles (workboats, skid loaders, cranes, mowers, trailers, and tractors),
buildings, dockwalls, railroad tracks, utilities, and dry pipe sprinkler
systems.
· Operate,
schedule, and deploy Port-owned vessels, including workboats.
· Operate,
maintain, repair, and replace heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
equipment, including air handling units, cooling towers, chillers, boilers, and
rooftop units.
· Perform
snow and ice removal on Port roads, docks, and railroad yards with the use of a
2-1/2-ton truck, plow, and diesel tractor loader with bucket.
· Use
basic mathematics to calculate amounts of materials needed for various tasks
and mix proper proportions of materials.
Safety
· Perform
all work safely, in accordance with departmental policies, municipal and state
laws, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
· Abide
by City and departmental work rules and safety instructions.
· Attend
departmental meetings and training programs, such as safety and policy
briefings.
Customer Service and Administrative
· As a
representative of Port Milwaukee, consistently provide excellent customer
service to residents, coworkers, Port customers, and Port tenants, by interacting
in a polite, respectful, and courteous manner.
· Complete
required paperwork such as work logs and timecards.
Port Operations and Maintenance
Technician 2 (in addition to the duties
listed above):
· Perform
maintenance duties on water hydrants and valves.
· Operate
forklift and similar equipment as needed.
Port
Operations and Maintenance Technician 3 (in addition to the duties listed above):
· Serve
as crew leader on daily projects when assigned.
· Operate
Port vessel for maintenance and inspection projects.

Conditions of Employment
Port
Operations and Maintenance Technicians 1, 2, and 3 must be willing and able to
do the following:
- Be
available for emergency and overtime work 24/7, including for long durations.
- Work
outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold,
rain, wind, and snow).
- Tolerate various
environmental conditions indoors and out (e.g., noise, vibration, dirt,
pollen, and sewer gases).
- Climb
and work at heights above 30 feet.
- Work
in confined space settings (training provided).
- Hear
directions given in a noisy, distracting environment.
- See
clearly both near and far to read signage and perform job duties safely
and accurately.
- Have
manual dexterity and strength to use various hand tools and power tools
properly and safely.
- Properly
lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. alone or up to 100 lbs. with
assistance.
- Perform
strenuous physical work continuously for long periods of time.
- Perform
physical activities in work environments that require walking and
standing, climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, crawling, crouching,
stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing, pushing and pulling.
- Perform work from a suspended staging over water.
The
preplacement medical requirements for this title include the following:
- Physical
exam
- Audiogram
- Vision
test
- Non-DOT
(U.S. Department of Transportation) drug test
Minimum Requirements
Port Operations and Maintenance Technician 1 Minimum Requirements:
1. Eighteen+ years of age at the time of application.
2. Valid driver’s license at time of application, throughout the selection process, and throughout employment.
Port Operations and Maintenance Technician 2 Minimum Requirements:
In addition to minimum requirements 1-4, above:
5. Two years of buildings, grounds, and vehicle maintenance experience.
6. Completion of forklift operations training at time of appointment.
7. Completion of confined space training at time of appointment.
Port Operations and Maintenance Technician 3 Minimum Requirements:
In addition to minimum requirements 1-4 and 6-7, above:
8. Four years of buildings, grounds, and vehicle maintenance experience.

Desirable Qualifications
- Experience
with railroad track maintenance.
- Experience
with vessel maintenance and operation.
- Experience
with oil and gas fired boiler maintenance and operation.
- Experience
with dry type fire sprinkler systems.
- Valid
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

picks, hooks, wrecking bars, and hand tampers.
- Ability
to safely drive a car and to learn to drive trucks and heavy equipment,
such as forklift trucks, skid loaders, and snow plows.
- Ability
to perform general maintenance of green areas and boulevards and safely
operate power, push and riding mowers.
- Ability
to safely shovel snow and operate snow blowers.
- Ability
to perform railroad inspection and repairs.
- Ability to perform basic maintenance tasks, such as replacing light fixtures and doing minor plumbing.

Current Salary
t Port Operations and Maintenance
Technician 1 (Pay Range 7AN)
The current starting salary range is $49,349-$60,173
annually, and the resident incentive starting salary for City of Milwaukee
residents is $50,829-$61,978 annually.

Technician 2 (Pay Range 7CN)
The current starting salary range is $61,686-$67,317
annually, and the resident incentive starting salary for City of Milwaukee
residents is $63,536-$69,337 annually.

The current starting salary range is $72,378-$85,608
annually, and the resident incentive starting salary for City of Milwaukee
residents is $74,549-$88,176 annually.

Selection Process
THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the
following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to
supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview,
or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the
right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and
performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises.
Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of
the job.
