Introduction

Purpose

Under the direction of the Fire Fleet and Equipment Manager, the Fire Equipment Repairer I inspects, repairs and maintains tires and hoses on all Milwaukee Fire Department vehicles and apparatus.

Essential Functions

  • Change and repair tires in the department shop or on location.
  • Inspect and evaluate all tires and tubes for damage, and determine necessity for repair, recap or scrap, and if warranty is applicable.
  • Work with vendors on recaps to offset costs to the department.
  • Rotate and balance tires. Inspect, match, and recondition rims for proper assembly.
  • Inspect and evaluate all fire hose for repair and replacement.
  • Reset and/or replace couplings in fire hose, and mend salvageable hose jackets.
  • Distribute and mark all new hose, maintain accurate records of hose inventory and assignment. Inspect, clean and refill department fire extinguishers.
  • Assist Fire Equipment Compressed Air Technician with repairing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) facepieces, backpacks, harness assemblies, and SCBA valve bodies, and assist with performance of SCBA facepiece fit/flow tests.
  • Drive department vehicles, including heavy equipment; plow department facilities and maintain plowing equipment.
  • Inspect and repair pike poles, ax and sledgehammer heads and handles, spanner belts and miscellaneous equipment.
  • Maintain required documentation and perform inventory duties.

Conditions of Employment

The Fire Equipment Repairer I must be willing and able to do the following:

  • Be subject to recall for emergencies.
  • Provide one’s own basic hand tools.
  • Perform very heavy work; have the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. alone and up to 100 lbs. with assistance or by wheeled conveyance.
  • Be physically able to drive department vehicles as well as to walk, stand, and climb ladders; kneel and crouch; and make repetitive motions.
  • Withstand noise and variable environmental conditions, both indoors and out, and in all types of weather.
  • Work with caustic materials and processes, high pressure air and oxygen equipment, and low-pressure, low-temperature liquefied oxygen fill equipment.
  • Wear and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) standard to tire repair, including the use of common and specialized safety equipment (i.e., shoes, gloves, glasses, hearing protection, safety vest and reflective clothing).

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position.
  2. Two years of experience mounting and repairing all tires sizes, including heavy truck tires, or comparable experience. 
  3. Certification to repair self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) within one year of employment.  
  4. Valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment. Must have a good driving record.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Certification in Tire Repair by the Tire Industry Association (TIA).

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of tire evaluation methods and standards.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools used in tire mounting, dismounting and repair.
  • Knowledge of tire and wheel maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of safe work practice in a shop environment, including the ability to use hand tools in a safe manner.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices in the field environment, including in and around traffic areas.
  • Ability to inspect tires, tire tubes, and rims, repair tires and tire tubes, evaluate tires to determine need for recapping, mount and dismount tires, safely and properly inflate tires, and balance tires.
  • Ability to change tires in the shop and in the field.
  • Ability to safely operate job-related equipment, such as a wheel balancer machine, tire changing machine, tire spreader, tire inflation safety cage, impact wrench, floor jack, tire bar, bead seater, hydraulic air jack, air chuck and inflator machine.
  • Ability to safely and properly brand tires.
  • Ability to safely operate and drive all department vehicles and heavy equipment, such as a passenger car, light truck, heavy truck, and forklift; ability to safely operate and maintain plows and plowing equipment.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge of steering, suspension, and braking.
  • Interpersonal skills to be able to positively interact with diverse staff at all levels of the organization and the public.
  • Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and fairly with coworkers and citizens whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.
  • Ability to read and understand work-related documents such as manuals and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to use City resources responsibly.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn and become skilled in the use of Microsoft Windows based maintenance tracking programs.

Current Salary

The current salary range (PAY RANGE 7DN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $37,314-$46,567 annually, and the non-resident salary range is $36,399-$45,425. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations and the Milwaukee Fire Department reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral or performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.

NOTE: Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process who have successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary, or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
