Purpose

Under the general direction of the Water Plant Maintenance Manager and Water Plant Maintenance Supervisor, the Machinery Technician independently performs system-wide installation, preventive maintenance and repair duties on medium-duty water system equipment. Assist skilled trades in complex and/or heavy-duty assignments.

Essential Functions

  • Perform repair and preventive maintenance activities for mechanical equipment system-wide such as valves, compressors, chemical feed equipment, distribution system storage facilities, water filtration equipment, pumps, appurtenances, and other water system equipment.
  • Perform basic equipment lifting and handling techniques to facilitate small equipment repairs.
  • Erect scaffolding, operate overhead cranes, and set up hitches as required to perform these duties, with due regard to safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Use computerized maintenance management system to record preventive and demand maintenance requests.
  • Assist in keeping perpetual inventory of spare parts required to perform preventive maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
  • Perform oxyacetylene torch applications as well as arc and gas welding tasks.
  • Remove and install ornamental and drinking fountains and associated tasks.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to perform duties related to custodial work and snow removal.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, enter confined spaces and wear confined space safety equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and handle 50 pounds or more of equipment or material.
  • Must be able to work at heights up to 100 feet high, in confined spaces, in close proximity to hazardous chemicals, in all weather conditions and with high noise levels.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate safety equipment including safety shoes, glasses, and hearing protection.
  • Must be able to work mandatory overtime and respond to emergency call-outs when needed.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Must possess good manual dexterity and be able to work in a water treatment plant facility on varying shifts to meet the 24/7/365 oversight of the treatment process.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Two years of experience performing industrial machine repair and maintenance duties related to this position.
  2. Certification for use of SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) equipment within six months of appointment and throughout employment.
  3. Ability to obtain a forklift and skid steer loader operator certification within six months of appointment and throughout employment.
  4. Valid Wisconsin driver’s license at time of application and throughout employment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • Machine shop experience.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of job related mathematics and mechanical drawing.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply safety principles and practices as they apply to all components of this job.
  • A high degree of mechanical aptitude and skill in machinery repair.
  • Ability to utilize applicable computer hardware and software like Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) programs.
  • Skill in performing job related mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in using drill presses, bench grinders, and hand tools common to the trade.
  • Ability to perform precision repairs on medium-duty equipment.
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance management programs.
  • Ability to perform basic pipe-fitting and plumbing tasks.
  • Ability to solder and weld using gas and electric cutting and welding equipment.
  • Ability to perform minor rigging and crane/hoist-assisted lifting procedures.
  • Ability to conduct basic grab sampling procedures to monitor process control.
  • Ability to read, diagnose and troubleshoot from service/technical manuals, blueprints, plans, specifications and other work-related documents.
  • Ability to create mechanical drawings to manufacture or install department equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, customers and the public even during adverse situations.
  • Ability to display tact and diplomacy with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to direct the work activities of assigned personnel.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with coworkers and citizens whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.

Current Salary

The current starting salary (PG 7GN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $44,459 annually and the non-resident salary is $43,368 annually.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
