Purpose

Under the general direction of the Library Technician III, The Library Technician II provides detailed clerical support to the Acquisitions and Serials Unit and the Copy Cataloging and Database Maintenance Unit of the Technical Services Department by ordering and processing new library material, creating electronic records, and maintaining the catalog database.

Essential Functions

Materials Processing and Preparation:

  • Create and update records in the online catalog database representing many formats of material.
  • Perform electronic record enhancements; clean up and update projects on records.
  • Write Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags for materials, and ensure distribution of materials.
  • Create orders and brief bibliographic records for materials; prepare and send electronic orders.
  • Open, unpack and verify materials; affix labels associated with materials.
  • Cover book jackets with Plasti-Kleer®, add disc pockets, and perform repairs as needed.

Acquisitions and Serials Unit:

  • Create orders and brief bibliographic records for all formats; prepare and send electronic orders.
  • Create and update check-in records for subscriptions, standing orders, microforms, and government documents.
  • Identify items in need of action related to title variations, publication patterns, and cancelled or ceased publications.
  • Prepare serials for shipment to bindery.
  • Sort newspapers, magazines and government documents for check-in.
  • Process errors and imperfect copies for return to vendor, and request vendor credits.
  • Prepare and process invoices using the City’s Financial Management Information System (FMIS).

Copy Cataloging and Database Maintenance Unit:

  • Compare catalog records to physical materials to verify bibliographic information is correct.
  • Assign call numbers to materials accurately, avoiding duplication.
  • Perform reinstatement routines on items that were previously deleted from the database.
  • Repackage non-book materials into lockable cases.
  • Scan and resize media art from vendor for use in the library’s packaging.
  • Recall materials from around the library system to correct processing errors.
  • Eliminate missing items from the database.
  • Operate the disc cleaning machine.
  • Participate in systemwide reclassification projects.

Customer Service and Training:

  • Sort and deliver interoffice, USPS, and UPS mail within Central Library.
  • Provide customer service and problem resolution via phone.
  • Provide training and documentation support to supervisors.

Conditions of Employment

  • The incumbent will be called upon to work as needed in the various Technical Services Units and must be willing to work at times that meet the needs of the library.
  • The Library Technician II must have the ability to lift materials weighing 10-20 lbs. unassisted frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • The Library Technician II must have the physical dexterity to manually process library materials, such as opening and unpacking boxes and applying various items to materials such as labels, pockets, and book jackets.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Two years of full-time office experience, including at least one year of computer data entry.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Familiarity with library catalog systems.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Ability to read and interpret job-related documents such policies, procedures, and reports.
  • Ability to make basic arithmetic calculations and to learn how to process invoices.
  • Skill in performing accurate data entry; ability to develop coding expertise and use computer systems to manage electronic files, such as the Library’s integrated library system (ILS), RFID software, FMIS, Baker & Taylor applications, and Microsoft productivity software.
  • Customer service and oral communication skills essential to providing professional assistance to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented, collaborative environment with people whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.
  • Aptitude for and interest in performing highly detailed clerical work.
  • Ability to arrange items precisely in alphabetical and numerical order.
  • Ability to carefully and accurately sort and process a high volume of items, including library materials and mail.
  • Ability to inspect items and make informed decisions regarding how to correct irregularities.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems related to materials processing.
  • Written communications skills to be able to prepare clear documentation and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively follow oral and written directions from supervisors.
  • Ability to establish priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines; flexibility to adjust to changing priorities.
  • Honesty, integrity, and the ability to safeguard City resources.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 6EN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $30,529-$35,922 annually, and the non-resident salary range is $29,780-$35,041.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job-related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations and the Milwaukee Public Library reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
