Introduction

The eligible list resulting from this examination may be used to fill similar City of Milwaukee positions.

Purpose

The Engineering Intern will assist civil engineers and engineering technicians with various engineering tasks in Environmental and Milwaukee Water Works Engineering Sections. Interns work approximately 20 hours per week and cannot exceed 1,040 hours per year.

Essential Functions

Environmental Engineering:

  • Assist engineers with plan reviews.
  • Assist engineers with field inspections.
  • Assist engineers with storm water management charge calculations.
  • Assist field technicians with outfall testing, smoke and dye testing and sanitary flow monitoring.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to work outdoors in variable weather conditions for extended periods of time.

Minimum Requirements

1.       Current enrollment as a sophomore or higher in an accredited college or university in civil engineering.

2.       Valid driver’s license and availability of a properly insured vehicle at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience using ArcGIS, Microstation and/or Microsoft Access.

Current Salary

SALARY (9PN): The current starting hourly rate (9PN) is $14.28 for City of Milwaukee residents. The non-resident starting hourly rate is $13.93. 

Note: Appointment may be up to $15.81 hourly for City of Milwaukee residents with junior status ($15.42 hourly for non-residents) and up to $17.96 hourly for City of Milwaukee residents with senior status ($17.52 hourly for non-residents).

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.  

INITIAL FILING DATE - The examination will be held as soon as practical after the application deadline listed above. Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice.  However, recruitment may continue until the needs of the City have been met. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the examination. Unless otherwise required by law, the City of Milwaukee will not provide alternative test administration.
