Purpose

The Machinist I performs skilled machining, metal fabrication and skilled equipment repair using tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, sheet metal benders, rollers, breaks, press breaks, shears pipe benders, hydraulic benders, punch presses, charts and tables.

Essential Functions

  • Install and repair hydraulically operated equipment and aerial equipment.
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic push jacks, air tools, pumps, trailers, derricks, paint spray machines, small engines and equipment unique to Electrical Services.
  • Machine sign standards, signs, brackets and supports, sheet metal cabinet work of light and heavy gauge steel and aluminum.
  • Machine and fabricate tools, jigs, fixtures and repairs of same as required for all sections and divisions of Infrastructure Field Operations and other Machine Shop work as required.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must furnish basic tools of the trade for use on the job.
  • Must be able to complete work assignments that may require evening or weekend work.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency call-outs when needed.
  • Must be able to lift and handle 50 pounds or more of equipment or material.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate safety equipment including safety shoes, glasses, and hearing protection.
  • Must possess good manual dexterity.

Minimum Requirements

1.    Three (3) years of job shop machinist experience, performing duties related to this position.

2.       A valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.  

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply safety principles and practices as they apply to all components of the job.
  • Knowledge of machining methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of welding and welding safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of metal types and metal properties when machining is done to different types of material.
  • Basic knowledge of job-related mathematics and mechanical drawing.
  • A high degree of mechanical aptitude and skill in the machining trade.
  • Ability to safely utilize  machinist’s tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, sheet metal benders, rollers, breaks, press break and shears, pipe benders and hydraulic benders, and punch press.
  • Willingness and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to read and interpret charts, tables, blueprints, and designs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with coworkers and citizens whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.

Current Salary

The current starting salary (PG 7IN) is $48,358 annually. The resident wage incentive starting rate for City of Milwaukee residents is $49,809 annually. Appointment will be made in accordance with the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.  

INITIAL FILING DATE - The examination will be held as soon as practical after the deadline listed above. Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice.
