At the City of Milwaukee, you will never be just a name on a paycheck; you will be part of the family.  The City of Milwaukee Municipal Services Electrician Apprenticeship allows individuals to “Earn-While-They-Learn,” by providing hands-on training experience while attending courses at the local technical college.  The City currently has 4 vacancies in the title of Municipal Services Electrician Apprentice.    

IMPORTANT:  Applicants for this position must have the desire and commitment to successfully complete a four year (8,320 hour) apprenticeship program leading to status as a Municipal Services Electrician.  Appointed candidates for this position must complete a journey-level Municipal Services Electrician exam with a passing grade before final appointment to journey-level Municipal Services Electrician.  

In addition to on-the-job training, the apprenticeship program requires the successful completion of electrical apprenticeship classes (720 hours classroom training) at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC).  Satisfactory progress must be maintained in all aspects of the program during the entire four-year apprenticeship period.  In order to remain in the program, Municipal Services Electrician Apprentices must complete the required coursework at MATC within timeframes established by the Department of Public Works and must at least receive a grade of "C" for each course.

Purpose

Under the direction and guidance of designated Municipal Services Electricians, a Municipal Services Electrician Apprentice performs duties related to installing, repairing and maintaining electrical systems and equipment for Street Lighting, Traffic Control, Communications, Facilities, Water/Sewer Instrumentations and movable bridges.

Essential Functions

  • Train in the inspection, installation, service, repair, and/or maintenance the following:
    • Overhead and underground wires, cables, transformers, switchgear and other accessories, underground conduits, manholes, and vaults;
    • Electronic/electrical and mechanical equipment and poles used to carry wires and cables;
    • Computerized systems, monitoring/control systems, DC battery systems, high voltage systems (>7KV), variable speed drive equipment, HVAC systems, alarms, and various motor types;
    • Cranes, telemetry, fiber optic and metallic cable, data-line telemetry, parking control, and other electric/electronic systems and
    • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and all types of raceway systems.
  • Attend classroom training and perform assigned homework and associated independent studies.
  • Drive or operate commercial and/or non-commercial vehicles as needed in assigned work unit.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be available for emergency call-in work. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be assigned on a rotating schedule.
  • Ability to see colors in order to use color-coded wiring systems (cannot be color-blind).
  • Ability to work in confined underground spaces.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities in the work environment that require agility, including ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps or poles; walking and standing, crawling, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing, pushing and pulling.  
  • Must be able to work at heights in excess of 100 feet.
  • Must be able to perform heavy physical work, exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally and lifting and moving objects weighing 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions including rain, wind, excessive heat, intense cold and snow.

Minimum Requirements

  1. A good driving record at time of application, throughout the selection process and throughout employment. 
  2. A valid Driver’s license is required at time of appointment and throughout employment.
  3. Commercial Driver's (CDL) License without air brake restrictions within 6 months of appointment.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Ability to understand moderately complex reading material and instructions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team environment with coworkers, employees from other City departments.
  • Ability to work in a setting with residents and fellow employees whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.
  • Ability to safely perform work while completing City project assignments.
  • Ability to identify basic hand tools and their uses.
  • Ability to work or learn to work with hand tools, electrical wires, equipment and machinery.

Current Salary

The current starting salary (PG 7KN) is $33,247 annually and will increase to the next column step outlined in the table below for each 2080 hours of work service.*

The resident incentive salary for City of Milwaukee residents (PG 7KN) is $34,244 annually and will increase to the next column step outlined in the table below for each 2080 hours of work service.*

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
