Take your 3+ years of experience as a plumber to the next level as a Plumbing Inspector with the City of Milwaukee, and serve a critical role in keeping Milwaukee’s citizens safe and healthy!
Under the direction of the Plumbing Inspection Supervisor, the Plumbing Inspector conducts inspections of private and public premises, including residential, governmental, commercial, and industrial, in order to verify compliance with City and State plumbing codes.
- Inspect drainage and plumbing installations and witness tests. Research codes to determine compliance. Identify faulty or inadequate construction methods or code violations during on-site inspections.
- Perform periodic inspections of commercial properties for cross connection sources and fire suppression systems.
- Investigate complaints and aldermanic service requests, and explain plumbing rules and regulations to building owners.
- In cases of noncompliance, draft and send legally enforceable orders to owners to correct conditions.
- Keep accurate records of inspections, and make detailed reports regarding complaints and rejections.
- Advise journey-level and master plumbers of modifications required to make installations compliant with existing regulations.
- Consult with contractors, builders, and architects on plumbing installations. Explain plumbing rules and regulations to building owners.
- Inspect occupancies and zoning certificates for taverns and restaurants.
- Appear in court regarding code violations and before committees regarding appeals.

Conditions of Employment
The Plumbing Inspector must be willing and able to do the following:
- Follow a uniform dress code prescribed by the department.
- Perform inspection services and work requiring moderate physical exertion, including stooping and bending, walking distances, climbing ladders and stairs, exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally (such as to move manhole covers), and lifting and moving objects weighing 10-20 lbs. frequently.
- Work outdoors in variable weather and environmental conditions as well as tolerate noise and exposure to airborne contaminants.
- Three years of experience as a licensed journey-level plumber or licensed master plumber.
- One of the following State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) licenses at time of application and throughout employment: 1) Master Plumber, OR 2) Journeyman Plumber. A Wisconsin Journeyman Plumber License must be obtained within six months of appointment. NOTE: The license type and number must be listed on the application.
- State of Wisconsin DSPS Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification within six months of appointment. Passing the one-year probationary period is contingent upon obtaining this certification.
- Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout employment and the availability of a properly registered and insured vehicle for use on the job (mileage reimbursement provided).
Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
- Knowledge of plumbing construction technology and materials; standard plumbing installation, repair, and maintenance techniques; and plumbing codes and inspection practices.
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret the State of Wisconsin DSPS plumbing code at the journey level as well as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes.
- Knowledge of building and construction principles, techniques, and materials.
- Knowledge of cross connection prevention practices.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply safety principles and practices.
- Ability to read mechanical and architectural blueprints to be able to understand building systems.
- Knowledge of mathematics, geometry, and algebra to perform calculations and make precise measurements.
- Ability to read and interpret work-related documents such as the City of Milwaukee Rules and Regulations Governing Water Service, the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Administrative Code.
- Written communication skills to be able to prepare correspondence and reports.
- Oral communication skills to clearly and accurately share information and respond to inquiries and complaints.
- Customer service knowledge and skills to serve the public in a courteous manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with designers, architects, engineers, attorneys, elected officials, City staff, and the public.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with coworkers and citizens whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound technical decisions independently.
- Skill in using standard computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database.
- Skill in planning and organizing work to be able to meet project deadlines.

The current salary range (PR 2HN) is $63,569-$76,806 annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $65,476-$79,110. Appointment will be made in accordance with the City of Milwaukee Salary Ordinance.

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations and the Department of Neighborhood Services reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations.
