Purpose

The Engineering Drafting Technician IV is responsible for the preparation and drafting of all street paving, underground conduit, street lighting, signals and/or map maintenance.

Essential Functions

Drafting and Record Management

  • Review permit requests for their impact on City street lighting and Communication Underground Conduit (CUC) facilities.
  • Compile and provide information to contractors, architects, public utilities and other City, County and State governmental agencies on current lighting and CUC facilities, work required to eliminate conflicts, and deposits necessary for street lighting and CUC work to be completed by City personnel.
  • Coordinate the protection, adjustment or relocation of street lighting and CUC facilities in conjunction with City projects or to accommodate other public or private construction projects.
  • Maintain records and perform all planning and design work related to the installation, operation, maintenance or removal of City alley lighting and CUC facilities.
  • Receive and investigate complaints and requests for additional lighting and CUC facilities from Alderman and City residents. 
  • Perform planning, drafting, field investigation, feasibility studies, data gathering, final site layout, plan preparation, cost estimates, work orders, timetable and material lists in conjunction with street lighting and CUC capital improvement projects.

 

Team Training and Work Review

  • Research and train for technical issues, troubleshooting and development of new drafting aids.
  • Create timelines of work distribution for project completion.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to work a rotating emergency call-in schedule for nights/weekends.
  • Must be available during construction season to work various hours of overtime as necessary.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, and snow).
  • Must be able to tolerate various environmental conditions indoors and out (e.g., noise, vibration, dirt, pollen, and sewer gases).
  • Must be able to work in confined space settings, i.e. entry into manholes (training provided).
  • Must be able to hear directions given in a noisy, distracting environment.
  • Must be able to see clearly both near and far.
  • Must be able to properly lift and move objects weighing up to 20 lbs. alone or up to 50 lbs. with assistance.

Minimum Requirements

1.   Four years of municipal or utility engineering technician experience as an Engineering Technician or Engineering Drafting Technician, including two years of experience using Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software (the two years of experience using CADD software may not be substituted for education). 

 

NOTE: College-level engineering curriculum courses, for which an average grade equivalent to “C” was earned, may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required experience in #1 above. Substitution will be made on the basis of five (5) credits equals three (3) months of experience and no substitution will be made for fewer than five (5) credits.

 

2.   Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

 

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Coursework in Civil Engineering Technology.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Ability to effectively utilize computer aided drafting and design (CADD) software.
  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations used for drafting.
  • Ability to prepare CADD drawings for various types of construction projects.
  • Skill in updating and maintaining engineering records, engineering data bases, and plat pages.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents.
  • Ability to read City maps and understand legal descriptions.

 

Time management and Critical Thinking

  • Analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively plan and schedule work and meet deadlines.

 

 

Team Training and Guidance

  • Ability to lead a team of Drafting Technicians by assigning and checking work for quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to train and familiarize new Drafting Technicians with various types of drafting work.

  • Interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with staff, contractors and the public in a diplomatic and professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to citizens from all economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds.

Current Salary

The current starting annual salary (PR 3NN) is $50,182-$61,296. The City of Milwaukee resident incentive is $51,688-$63,135 annually. Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval..

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral, performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.
