Purpose

The IT Support Specialist – Senior serves as the department’s system administrator and resident technical expert on information systems, procedures, hardware, and software for both server and microcomputer based applications.

Essential Functions

Network and System Administration

  • Manage the daily operations and maintenance of the City Attorney’s Local Area Network (LAN) and file servers, including maintenance of department-specific applications and data systems.
  • Serve in a Tier 2 help desk capacity to provide application and user support for integrated software programs/packages and standard office software packages.
  • Manage documentation on network administration procedures and maintain inventory for all department hardware and software.
  • Monitor the department’s compliance with software application licensing agreements, research and recommend hardware and software acquisitions, and design and implement network configurations.
  • Assist departmental management with long-range information systems planning, providing technical expertise, alternative approaches, and cost information.
  • Configure. Install and provide on-going support for all hardware in use within the department, including computer workstations, peripheral components, and printers.
  • Configure, install, and provide on-going support for all software applications in use.
  • In cooperation with Information Technology Management Division (ITMD) and City Cyber Task Force, manage network security for the department.
  • Maintains the department’s website and social media content.
  • Address information technology audit issues and resolve any deficiencies; apprise City Attorney relative to the status of audit matters.

 

Information System Design, User Support and Project Work

  • Provide system application, hardware, and software support to departmental users.
  • Develop and document procedures for technology-related tasks.
  • Train departmental staff on new procedures, applications, hardware and software.
  • Assist the Ordinance Enforcement Division staff in the use of specialized software and resources.
  • Serve as liaison to vendors, individuals and city departments and committees.
  • Create financial and operational reports for the City Attorney, other departments and committees.

Conditions of Employment

  • The IT Support Specialist-Senior must be able to perform light physical work, including lifting and moving objects up to 10 pounds occasionally.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position, or status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed term position.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems, or a closely-related field from an accredited college or university.
  3. Two years of experience performing systems administration (i.e., configuring, operating, and supporting software, hardware, servers, and workstations) in a Tier 2 information technology support environment.
  4. Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and throughout employment.

 

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. For example, a related associate’s degree plus four years of experience as described under #2, above, is considered equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Knowledge of network operating systems, client-server concepts, and local area network/wide area network (LAN/WAN) protocols, including Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
  • Knowledge of Windows Active Directory (AD) and group policies.
  • Ability to write and use Windows scripting.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with UNIX/LINUX operating system (OS) as well as Internet Information Services (IIS) for Windows Server and Apache web server.
  • Knowledge of virtual environments, including servers and workstations, virtual private networks (VPNs), and firewall configuration.
  • Analytical skills and the ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot application and hardware issues.
  • Skill in identifying patterns and taking preventive action to avert future system issues.
  • Ability to use standard computer software and programs such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to use the Internet and other resources to conduct research.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as policies, procedures, and technical publications.

Current Salary

The current salary range (2GN) is $56,767-$72,063 and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $58,470-$74,225. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods. The City Attorney's Office reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral exams, performance tests, or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.

 

NOTE: Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process who have successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position or who have status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed term position will be considered.
