Introduction

Purpose
The Traffic Sign Worker II is responsible for the maintenance,
installation, and replacement of traffic control signs within the City of
Milwaukee.
Essential Functions
- Install, maintain, and repair all traffic control signs within a given district; determine proper location and message on missing or replaced signs.
- Initiate and implement the annual sign replacement program within an assigned district.
- Inspect and replace signs.
- Initiate record changes and ensure the accuracy of computerized sign records.
- Ensure the care and operation of related mechanical and vehicle equipment.
Conditions of Employment
- Must be able to work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, and snow).
- Must have manual dexterity and strength to use various hand tools and power tools properly and safely.
- Must be able to perform physical activities in work environments that require walking and standing, climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, crawling, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing, pushing and pulling.
- Must be able to properly lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. alone or up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Must be able to work in a noisy, distracting environment.
Minimum Requirements
- Regular Status as a City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position, or status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed term position.
- Six months of full-time experience performing duties similar to City Laborer.
- Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be
considered.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Technical
- Ability to read and understand documents, such as work rules, policies, operating manuals, and signs.
- Ability to organize and complete work assignments while adhering to deadlines.
- Ability to read and interpret street maps and navigate the City of Milwaukee.
- Ability to use hand tools and light power tools properly and safely.
- Ability to always exercise care and good judgment regarding safety, abiding by safety-related policies, laws, and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
Interpersonal and Judgement
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision,
- Written communication skills to summarize data and prepare reports.
- Verbal communication skills to effectively convey information to other staff and managers.
- Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and fairly with coworkers and residents whose background may differ from one’s own.
Current Salary
The current salary range (PR 8GN) is $40,963 annually,
and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents
is $42,192. Appointments will be made in accordance with the salary
ordinance.
Selection Process
THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will
consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation;
written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The
Department of Public Works reserves the right to call only the most qualified
candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include
written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by
further analysis of the job.
INITIAL FILING DATE: The selection process will be held as soon as practical after DATE Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice. However, recruitment may continue until the needs of the City have been met.
NOTE: Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and
Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or
to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel
in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process who have
successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position or who
have status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed term position will be
considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary, or emergency
appointments are not eligible for transfer.
