Purpose

Under the direction of the WIC Program Manager, the Dietetic Technician assigned to the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program provides nutritional assessment and determines program eligibility for the Milwaukee Health Department’s (MHD) WIC participants.

Essential Functions

WIC CERTIFICATION

  • Complete the WIC certification process, including performing nutritional assessment and counseling; breastfeeding counseling and promotion; intake and registration; anthropometric measurement (measuring and recording height and weight); and hemoglobin testing.
  • Issue WIC benefits.

CLIENT SCREENING AND REFERRALS

  • Screen clients using WIC nutrition criteria to identify high-risk and at-risk clients and to make appropriate referrals to the registered dietitian.

CLIENT MONITORING AND EDUCATION/TRAINING

  • Analyze nutrient composition and intake for clients.
  • Conduct group and individual nutrition education.
  • Assist nutritionists in the development of nutritional education classes and programs.
  • Assist nutritionists in training students and MHD staff relative to WIC outreach activities.
  • Assess immunization records and provide necessary referrals.
  • Participate in WIC clinic team meetings to assist in quality assurance initiatives.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees assigned to the WIC Program will be expected to report to any of the City of Milwaukee WIC clinic locations. Assignment may be made on short notice to provide staff coverage during unexpected absences or emergency situations.
  • All WIC staff members participate in a work schedule that includes early evening hours on assigned days. The current hours of work for this position are as follows: M, TU, W, and F, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; TH, 10:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

The Dietetic Technician must be willing and able to do the following:

  • Lift and move 25 pounds, including lifting small children onto measuring apparatus such as scales.
  • Pass a tuberculosis (TB) skin test annually.
  • Carry a mobile device during business hours.
  • Wear industry-related Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, facemask, or face shield to reduce exposure to infectious agents or toxins while performing the duties of this job.

Minimum Requirements

1.    Associate degree from an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)-approved dietetic technician program OR a bachelor’s degree in nutritional sciences, dietetics, or a related field from an accredited college or university.

2.    Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics registration as a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) at time of appointment and throughout employment. NOTE: Candidates who possess a related bachelor’s degree as described in #1 above are not required to be DTR certified.

3.    Valid driver's license and use of a properly insured automobile* for use on the job at time of appointment and throughout employment. (*Private Auto Allowance may be paid pursuant to Section 350-183 of the Milwaukee Code.)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

TECHNICAL

  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in the field of nutrition, breastfeeding, and public health. 
  • Ability to read and interpret work-related documents.
  • Ability to work with infants and small children.
  • Ability to take measurements such as height and weight accurately and perform iron and lead testing.
  • Ability to learn and use the ROSIE web-based software system that tracks WIC data and standard computer software applications.
  • Ability to develop and conduct presentations and educational classes.

COMMUNICATION, INTERPERSONAL, AND CUSTOMER FOCUS

  • Skill in verbal communication in order to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals or groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Skill in written communication, including the ability to compose relevant, legible counseling notes.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with multidisciplinary and multicultural staff members, clients, city officials, and community groups.
  • Ability to work well in a participative, team environment.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with people whose backgrounds may differ from one's own.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 5CN) is $35,444-$42,331 annually, and the current incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $36,507-$43,601 annually. Appointment will be made in accordance with the City’s Salary Ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
