Purpose

The Engineering Technician IV performs layout and design of the City of Milwaukee’s Traffic Control Signing and Marking System using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) systems.

Essential Functions

LAYOUT AND DESIGN

  • Prepare plans, work orders, cost estimates, and other related documents for the installation of traffic control signs and markings for State and Local paving projects.
  • Maintain traffic sign, signal, and marking records on computer-based, hard document, and other data retention systems.
  • Generate and distribute reports from the inventory databases.
  • Prepare traffic sign and marking layouts, and issue work orders to field and shop personnel for various capital improvement programs, operations and maintenance programs, and work tasks.
  • Perform field layout of signing and marking installations for paving and other improvement and maintenance projects.

COORDINATION AND ADMINISTRATION

  • Contact Diggers Hotline to obtain necessary clearance for underground installations.
  • Coordinate signing and marking installations and related work with field and shop personnel.
  • Investigate requests for the repair, replacement, and installation of new traffic control signs and markings for City officials and the general public.
  • Review permit applications for work by private contractors in public right-of-way.

Conditions of Employment

The Engineering Technician IV must be willing and able to do the following:
  • Perform light physical work, including exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Stand, walk, and crouch; reach, push, and pull; and perform work requiring repetitive motions.
  • Withstand variable indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, such as temperature changes, rain, and snow.

The pre-placement medical requirements for this position include the following:

  • Physical exam with lift test
  • Audiogram
  • Vision
  • Drug Test

Minimum Requirements

  1. Associate degree in civil engineering or an engineering field from an accredited college or university, AND Two years of engineering or construction inspection experience related to the essential functions listed above, OR Four years of engineering or construction inspection experience related to the essential functions listed above.
  2. A valid driver’s license and good driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

TECHNICAL

  • Knowledge of CADD systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret job-related documents.
  • Knowledge of engineering-related mathematics, including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
  • Ability to perform accurate data entry.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office to produce documents and reports.
  • Knowledge of the U.S. DOT-Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Ability to learn State statutes and City ordinances related to traffic control and parking.

INTERPERSONAL

  • Customer service skills to answer routine questions and work politely with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment with people whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.
  • Written communication skills to write clear and concise technical reports as well as compose general business correspondence.
  • Verbal communication skills to clearly communicate program information to various audiences.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Current Salary

The current starting salary (Pay Range 3TN) is $68,389-$85,182 annually and the current incentive starting salary for City of Milwaukee residents is $70,441-$87,738 annually. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
