The department may fill positions at the Vehicle Services Technician 2 or 3 level, based upon candidate qualifications and the nature of the assignment.

Candidates will be placed on the highest-level list for which they qualify.

Purpose

Vehicle Services Technicians inspect, maintain, and repair operating systems for a variety of automobiles, light trucks, vans, heavy trucks, and equipment.

There are current Vehicle Services Technician vacancies for both first and second shift.

Essential Functions

VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

  • Perform simple to complex maintenance and repair of major automotive operating systems, including steering, suspension, heating, cooling, exhaust, emission control, transmission, fuel, brake, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, and computer-controlled systems.
  • Repair various engine types, including gasoline, diesel, propane, and alternative fuel.
  • Conduct routine service such as lubricating steering, suspension, and other components; changing oil and fluids; and performing inspections for safety and operational fitness.
  • Take repair orders and work independently or in consultation with shop employees, drivers, or supervisors to diagnose problems related to equipment malfunctions; complete appropriate repairs.
  • Perform heating and cutting operations with a torch and minor welding.
  • Perform minor vehicle body repair work and touch-up painting.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Test drive vehicles and test operational fitness of other equipment.
  • Perform general computer input and use related manuals, diagnostic equipment, and various work tools.
  • Perform services during emergencies and snow and ice control operations.

Conditions of Employment

Vehicle Services Technicians must be willing and able to do the following:

  • Provide standard industry tools needed to perform job in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Be subject to mandatory call-in for emergency duty during non-standard business hours. 
  • Properly lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. 

NOTE: This position is subject to U.S. Department of Transportation Regulations on Drug and Alcohol Testing, including the required release of drug and alcohol tests conducted by previous employers within two years preceding appointment and random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment with the City of Milwaukee.

The preplacement medical requirements for this title include the following:

  • Physical/lift test
  • Audiogram
  • Vision
  • DOT – Drug Test

Minimum Requirements

Vehicle Service Technician 2:

  1. Two years of experience overhauling and repairing automotive equipment (also see “Both Positions,” below).

Vehicle Services Technician 3:

  1. Three years of experience overhauling and repairing automotive equipment (also see “Both Positions,” below).

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered (i.e., an associate degree in automotive technology can substituted for two years of experience or a technical diploma in automotive technology can be substituted for one year of experience).

Both Positions:

  1. Valid Wisconsin Driver's license at time of appointment and throughout employment.
  2. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B without the air brake restriction within six months of appointment and throughout employment. NOTE: DPW Fleet Services will provide education and training for employees who are required to obtain a CDL for their position with the City. It is the employee's responsibility to obtain their CDL. *See note, below.
  3. Good driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment. Driving records will be checked prior to job offer.

*A CDL must be obtained within six months of appointment by doing the following:

  1. Passing the General Knowledge and Air Brakes portions of the Commercial Driver’s License test given by the State of Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), AND
  2. Passing a road test administered by an approved third-party administrator.

Desirable Qualifications

  • CSA (Canadian Standards Association) certified CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) tank inspector, Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in the Automotive series A1 through A8, Medium/Heavy Truck series T2 through T8, and L1 and L2 Advanced Engine diagnostics and drive ability. (NOTE: Receiving these certifications may qualify for incentive rates and/or advancement to the Vehicle Service Technician 4 level.)

TECHNICAL

  • Ability to effectively and efficiently maintain and repair automotive vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and defects with or without the use of diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools and mechanical tools associated with automotive repair and municipal equipment repair.
  • Ability to completely overhaul automotive equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret service, repair, and parts manuals in hard copy and digital formats.
  • Ability to repair and replace automotive or municipal equipment parts and components.
  • Ability to use applicable computer hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and the ability to perform work safely.

INTERPERSONAL

  • Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with people whose backgrounds may differ from one's own.
  • Ability to perform effectively within a team environment.
  • Effective listening skills.

PROFESSIONALISM

  • Ability to complete work assignments in a timely manner.

Current Salary

Vehicle Services Technician 2:

The current salary range (Pay Range 7FN) is $67,578-$80,624 annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $69,605-$83,043.

Vehicle Services Technician 3:

The current salary range (Pay Range 7GN) is $69,768-$85,608 annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $71,861-$88,176.

  • NOTE 1: Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.
  • NOTE 2: Vehicle Service Technicians may receive an incentive rate for completing related ASE and CNG certifications.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
