Purpose

The Tow Lot Crew Leader monitors the operations related to vehicle movement and Tow Lot functions.

Essential Functions

Tow Lot Operations 

  • Intake, release and inventory towed vehicles.
  • Use and create database queries to locate vehicles, establish/create dispositions, identify entry errors or questionable dispositions and evaluate data.
  • Assess and document the condition of vehicles.
  • Utilize multiple databases, such as the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), to establish ownership and check for stolen vehicles.
  • Perform daily queries to monitor the vehicle inventory.
  • Manipulate and use spreadsheets to accurately input vehicle data and perform basic database functions, such as sorting and exporting data.
  • Arrange for proper intake and storage of vehicles.
  • Monitor the documentation and vehicles sent to the City’s Recycling Contractor.
  • Track the documentation of all outgoing vehicles to ensure release to the proper individual or entity.

Administrative and Staff Operations

  • Oversee the day-to-day towing, intake, inventory and release of vehicles.
  • Monitor the shift assignments for Tow Lot Attendant and any temporary workers assigned.
  • Assist in providing training for Tow Lot Attendants.
  • Oversee Tow Lot snow removal, including shoveling, snow blowing, salting, and cleaning.
  • Run quality control checks to identify inconsistencies and take appropriate corrective action on items identified.
  • Validate information and coordinate record corrections with the Parking Information Desk (PID) and the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) to ensure accuracy.
  • Prepare daily reports and inform the Tow Lot management team of the previous day’s activities.
  • Communicate onsite with contractors; monitor contractor compliance and alert managers to any issues.
  • Oversee, document, and monitor tow lot fleet vehicle and equipment maintenance activities.
  • Act as the on-duty supervisor for weekend rotations.
  • Produce, distribute and review weekly schedules for Tow Lot Attendants.

Customer Service

  • Monitor the flow of the electronic queue to ensure that customers are seen in the proper order.
  • Aid Attendants in responding to customer inquiries.

Conditions of Employment

  • Work an assigned schedule that includes Monday through Friday; this schedule adjusts to accommodate the need to work weekends.
  • Work various shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays, and coverage of other shifts, to meet the needs of the Tow Lot.
  • Work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind and snow).
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing 50 pounds or more occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds consistently.
  • Ability to drive various types of passenger vehicles (including both automatic and manual transmissions), wheel lift tow trucks, end loaders, and skid steers.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position, or status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed term position.
  2. Three years of customer services, inventory, and/ or automotive support experience, including data entry.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 8DN) is $51,816- $60,106 annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $53,370 - $61,909 annually.  Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the Salary Ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job-related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, an evaluation of written communication, interviews, and/or other assessment methods. The Department of Public Works reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to proceed in the selection process. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.
