Purpose

The Engineering Technician V provides project management oversight for field survey crews and prepares designs for street and alleyway paving projects.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare field plans and surveys for existing grades and locations.
  • Design and prepare paving plans for all streets and alleys under City jurisdiction.
  • Design and prepare plans for special streetscape treatments and alignments.
  • Design major arterials for state and federal-aided projects.
  • Prepare paving and traffic calming estimates and assessments for designs.
  • Measure completed work for sewer and street projects.
  • Prepare certificates of completed street construction work showing quantities of work completed.
  • Coordinate, direct, plan and organize the activities of a field crew.
  • Train engineering technicians in field work and design related to traffic and paving.

Conditions of Employment

  • Physical ability to stand, walk, climb, crouch, crawl, push and pull, and perform repetitive motions.

Minimum Requirements

1. Five years of surveying and roadway design experience.

OR

Associate Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field and three years of surveying and roadway design experience.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and one year of surveying and roadway design experience.

 

2. Valid Driver’s license and good driving record at time of appointment and throughout appointment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Knowledge of surveying standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge of street and alley design criteria.
  • Ability to use survey equipment, including total station, data collector, level/leveling rod, and engineering tape. 
  • Knowledge of and proficient use of MicroStation and/or Civil 3D drafting software. 
  • Ability to effectively use computer programs such as the Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Knowledge of street design criteria/codes, and design techniques desired.
  • Proficiency in preparing cost estimates.
  • Proficiency in organizing work on multiple projects.
  • Ability to produce detailed and accurate drawings and to interpret technical drawings and documents.
  • Ability to read and apply work-related materials, such as governmental regulations and City ordinances.
  • Knowledge of project management practices.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and work on multiple projects.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 3UN) is $72,510-$89,557 annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $74,685-$92,244.

Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
