The Engineering Intern position is a fixed-term role within the
City of Milwaukee. Engineering Interns may work during the summer and/or
year-round and are eligible to apply for transfer/promotional opportunities prior to completion of the internship.
Purpose
Engineering Interns assigned to the Milwaukee Water Works
(MWW) Engineering section assist with various engineering and construction inspection tasks.
Essential Functions
Engineering Support
- Assist with construction and material inspection, hydrant flow testing, pressure monitoring and the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
- Assist with the maintenance of the MWW Geographic Information System (GIS).
- Assist with the preparation of construction plans, technical specifications, contract advertisements, owner notifications and record keeping.
- Assist with the review of paving plans, sewer plans and permits for their impact on the MWW distribution system.
- Assist with research and analysis of MWW facilities and the distribution system, including hydraulic modeling.

Conditions of Employment
- Must be able to work outdoors in variable weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds of equipment or materials.
- Ability to walk long distances.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to climb stairs.

Minimum Requirements
- Current enrollment as a sophomore or higher in an accredited college or university in pre-civil engineering, construction management, civil engineering, architecture or a closely related program.
- Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Desirable Qualifications
- Experience using ArcGIS, MicroStation, and Microsoft Office software.
- Knowledge of methods used in underground utilities construction.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Technical
- Knowledge of engineering analysis and design methods.
- Knowledge of mathematics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus and statistics.
- Ability to make accurate calculations.
- Proficient with word processing and spreadsheet software and the Internet.
- Ability to use measurement tools related to surveying and checking transfer of line and grade, including tape measures, measuring wheels, string lines and levels.
- Ability to read and interpret work-related documents.

- Written communication skills to produce correspondence and reports.
- Verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with co-workers, management, and the public.
- Ability to communicate professionally, develop and maintain strong working relationships and function as part of a team.

Current Salary
The current wage rate (PR 9PN) is $20.54 per hour
and the resident incentive wage rate for City of Milwaukee residents is $21.36 per
hour.
Selection Process
THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job-related and will
consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education,
experience, and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or
performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The
Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most
qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations.
Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process
component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
