Purpose
The Library Technical Services Specialist provides support
for processing, maintaining, and enhancing access to the Milwaukee Public
Library (MPL) collections.
Essential Functions
Materials Processing & Database Maintenance
- Create and update item records and update order records in the Integrated Library System (ILS).
- Receive, unpack, and verify newly acquired library materials.
- Route materials in and out of the technical services department.
- Apply labels and packaging to library materials.
- Activate Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tags applied to library materials.
Collection Support
- Support the work of professional librarians in collection upkeep, including physically processing materials.
- Repair and preserve items as directed under MPL best practices.
- Assist with retrospective collections projects, including digital collections creation and enhancement.
- Maintain designated collections and collection spaces in identified spaces, which may include shifting, collection measuring, labeling, and reporting issues.
- Scan, image capture, and use an Optical Character Recognition for correcting work and formatting.
- Refer item or bibliographic record discrepancies to a Librarian or the Technical Services department.
- Provide Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Support, including processing ILL requests and returns, and pulling and routing materials for ILL usage.
System Support:
- Handle and route incoming and outgoing mail, including interoffice delivery within Central Library.
- Assist with providing training to new employees and cross-training current staff.
- Assist in developing, documenting, and maintaining departmental procedures.

Conditions of Employment
The Library Technical Services Specialist must be willing
and able to do the following:
- Perform medium physical work (i.e., work that involves stooping, reaching, standing, and walking) daily.
- Lift and move items continually weighing up to 10 pounds, frequently up to 20 pounds, and on occasion up to 50 pounds, as well as push and pull wheeled loads weighing approximately 100 pounds (i.e., a loaded book truck).
Minimum Requirements
- Two years of full-time office experience, including one year of data entry.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

- Facility, speed, and accuracy in keyboarding.
- Ability to use computer software, including Microsoft Office/365 Suite, Integrated Library System (ILS), library-related systems, and manage electronic files.

- Ability to accurately calculate basic arithmetic problems.
- Ability to effectively follow instructions from supervisors, both verbally and in written form.

Current Salary
The current starting annual salary (Pay Range 5AN) is $40,826, and the resident incentive starting salary for City of Milwaukee residents is $42,459.

Selection Process
The Selection Process will be job-related and will
consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience,
and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a
structured interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee
Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to
structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may
include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be
determined by further analysis of the job.

held as soon as practical after the deadline listed above. Receipt of
