Purpose

Engineering Technicians I and II assist with surveying activities for improvement projects and related studies by collecting field measurements, downloading field data into Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, and preparing background drawings, estimates and certificates.

Successful candidates will be placed on the highest-level list for which they qualify.

Essential Functions

Field Surveying and Instrumentation:

  • Assist the Engineering Technician IV in conducting field surveys for infrastructure improvement projects and related studies.
  • Perform survey activities including setting transit lines and establishing grades based on benchmark data.
  • Conduct surveys for streets, alleys, major arterials, grade separation structures, utilities (sewers, water mains, tunnels), dredging, street repairs, obstructions, land descriptions, plats of survey, subdivisions, and drainage complaints.

Data Processing, Drafting and Records Management:

  • Process and transfer field data into CADD and GIS software to support the development of preliminary paving design plans.
  • Prepare and update maps, charts, graphs, drawings, and databases using CADD and GIS applications.
  • Maintain and organize digital and hard-copy project records.

Construction Quantification, Documentation and Payment Support:

  • Assist in quantifying completed work, documenting results, and compiling certification data to support contractor payments using Excel, MicroStation, and related systems.
  • Prepare and update estimates and certificate documentation for construction projects, including those funded by external agencies or grants.

Design Support and Plan Preparation:

  • Assist in preparing designs and construction plans for street and alley paving contracts.

Stakeholder Communication:

  • Communicate relevant project-related information to property owners and other stakeholders.

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to meet the job's physical demands, including standing, walking, twisting, bending, climbing stairs, and lifting and pushing items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must withstand exposure to various environmental conditions (e.g., noise, dirt, pollen, heat and cold).
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment, including safety shoes, glasses, and a respirator.

Minimum Requirements

BOTH - Engineering Technician I and II:

1. Successful completion of high school algebra AND high school geometry.
2. Valid driver’s license and good driving record at the time of application and throughout employment.

Engineering Technician II:

3. One year of full-time experience as Engineering Technician I, or one full year of experience performing field surveying.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Civil Engineering.
  • CADD and/or GIS experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical:

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations, such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
  • Ability to learn and use survey equipment including total station, data collector, level/leveling rod, and engineering tape.
  • Familiarity with street and alley design criteria and techniques.
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret, and use work related materials, such as governmental regulations, City ordinances, construction plans and utility maps.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft 365 and/or Civil 3D drafting software to produce documents, reports, and enter data.
  • Ability to use computer programs such as the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to read maps and navigate effectively throughout the City.

Communication and Interpersonal:

  • Verbal communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts to property owners and stakeholders, ensuring clarity and understanding of information.
  • Verbal Communication skills to share concise information with other staff members and management.
  • Written communication skills, including preparing accurate and legible reports, drawings, and other business correspondence.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently manage priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to build strong effective teams.
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals for successful project completion.
  • Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and fairly with coworkers and residents from diverse backgrounds.

Current Salary

Engineering Technician I:

The current salary range (PR 3PN) is $59,541- $79,542 annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $61,923-$82,723 annually.

Engineering Technician II:

The current salary range (PR 3QN) is $64,118-$85,905 annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $66,683-$89,341 annually.

Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon experience level and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job-related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience, and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test; a structured interview; or other assessment methods.
