Introduction
THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM CIVIL SERVICE
Appointment and continued employment are at the pleasure of the Executive Director of the Election Commission.
All seasonal staff working for the City of Milwaukee Election Commission (MEC) must be qualified electors of Milwaukee County and are expected to take an oath.
MEC workers work long hours and weekends during busy periods in high-stress environments; however, it can be one of the most rewarding jobs, offering a welcoming community, a great job experience and a real, tangible role in protecting our democracy.
The Seasonal Election Worker Lead typically works 10-40 hours per week during an election cycle.
Employment begins as early as six weeks prior to an election and continues up to three weeks after the election.

Purpose
The Seasonal Election Worker Lead in the Election
Commission’s training division provides administrative, customer service, and
training support to the Training Manager and training staff by coordinating election
training sessions and performing receptionist duties.
Essential Functions
Administrative
- Provide clerical support, including receptionist duties, typing documents, inputting data and maintaining records for the training division.
- Prepare and process correspondence, reports, training schedules and materials, using Microsoft Word and other automated systems.
- Proofread written materials to ensure accuracy and correct grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and spelling.
- Follow written procedures exactly as prescribed.
- Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers by phone and in person, including responding to inquiries and explaining departmental policies and procedures.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment, including copiers and printers.
Training and Lead Worker
- Support training staff during all phases of poll worker training sessions in-class and/or virtually.
- Coordinate with training staff to ensure training classes are scheduled and posted.
- Follow up with poll workers to ensure time sheets are completed and attendance is accurate.
- Handle various voter inquiries, professionally representing the Election Commission to members of the public.
- Communicate with and provide feedback to the training manager on any emerging issues regarding any seasonal workers or interactions with the public.

Conditions of Employment
- Must work overtime and weekends as needed. Some overtime will be mandatory to meet the Election's needs. (Election Day lasts from 5:30 a.m. until approximately 11:00 p.m.)
Minimum Requirements
- One year of office or administrative support experience coordinating and working on a variety of complex clerical assignments related to the essential functions.
- Must be a resident of Milwaukee County at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
- Must be a qualified elector of the State of Wisconsin
meeting the following criteria:
- At least 18 years of age at the time of application close.
- Have resided in Wisconsin for at least 28 consecutive days.
- Not otherwise disqualified from voting (Please review Wis. Stat. § 6.03 for disqualifications from voting).
- Ability to travel independently throughout Milwaukee, either by transit, bicycle, or automobile.
- Successful completion of Wisconsin Elections Commission required election training, including WisVote certification, within three months of appointment and throughout employment.

Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working in Elections.
- Familiarity with election equipment, materials and procedures.
- Experience in teaching/training and/or educational administrative support.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Technical
- Knowledge of office procedures, systems, terminology, and equipment.
- Ability to read and understand work-related documents, such as policies and procedures.
- Ability to learn election laws, rules, policies and procedures (e.g., Wisconsin State Statutes, Milwaukee Election Commission).
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Knowledge of standard software applications to create documents, use spreadsheets and generate reports.
- Ability to learn specialized computer applications to query databases and perform other job-related transactions.

- Verbal communication skills to convey information clearly and effectively to voters and Election Commission staff.
- Written communication skills to prepare correct correspondence and documents.
- Knowledge of English writing mechanics and the ability to proofread documents and reports.

- Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and fairly with coworkers and residents whose background may differ from one’s own.

Current Salary
The current starting hourly rate (Pay Range 9KN) is $21.59, and the resident incentive starting hourly rate for City of Milwaukee residents is $22.45.
Temporary appointees are not eligible for benefits.
