Senior Stores Specialist (#20001846)


General Statement

Under general supervision, is responsible for the activities of employees engaged in the inventory and cataloging of items and/or assists in the analysis and control of optimum inventory levels maintained in major storerooms and other areas throughout the District.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs or directs scheduled cycle and exception counts of physical inventories; investigates variances, discrepancies or exceptions and recommends corrective actions; maintains computerized inventory records; prepares and coordinates distribution of inventory reports.
  • Determines material requirement profiles (MRP); analyzes supply and demand discrepancies; ensures that correct consumptions values are maintained; monitors and recommends revisions to order points, order quantities and lead times; develops item and volume specifications for systems contracts.
  • Recommends disposition of excess and obsolete inventory.
  • Develops, verifies and recommends updates to descriptions and specifications for catalog items; evaluates, approves and processes new item requests and catalog changes; analyzes inventory descriptions and recommends standardization and elimination of duplicate Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) where appropriate.
  • Reviews and approves field-originated requisitions; coordinates requisitions with changes to the operations schedule.
  • Assigns, supervises and reviews work; ensures staff compliance with District policies and procedures including Personnel Rules and Administrative Procedures; completes performance reviews; addresses employee complaints and grievances; may recommend employment actions such as hiring, transfer, suspension, promotion or discharge.

Other Job Functions

  • Develops and implements improved inventory measurement and monitoring methods.
  • Maintains, publishes and distributes Board of Standards specifications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Positions in this classification involve a combination of office work and work in a warehouse or storeroom environment.  Office work is performed in a typical office environment and requires the use of standard office equipment including computers.  Work in a warehouse or storeroom environment involves exposure to a variety of tools, equipment, chemicals and other industrial materials.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of storeroom and warehousing operations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of computerized inventory control management.
  • Considerable knowledge of statistical methods relating to inventory analysis and planning.
  • Considerable knowledge of industrial-type commodities and equipment in use by the District.
  • Skill in writing technical engineering specifications for parts and equipment.
  • Ability to identify inventory problems and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate staff.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage inventory management studies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in business or public administration, engineering or allied science and two years of experience in cataloging and inventory control with an emphasis on inventory analysis and planning in a computerized environment.

Substitution

Additional experience in cataloging or computerized inventory control may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

  • One year of service with the District as a Stores Specialist.
  • Civil service status as a Stores Specialist.
